Puran poli is a sweet flatbread stuffed with a sweet filling made from chana dal, coconut flakes & jaggery. This sweet filling flavoured with spices like Cardamom, Cinammon, nutmeg etc.,,
It’s really easy to make at home. It’s kids friendly & perfect snack. This is the first recipe I have learned from my practical class during my ug (nutrition & dietetics). So this recipe was always special to my heart.
Puran poli /paruppu poli
For dough ;
All purpose flour /maida – 2 cups
Turmeric pwd – 1/2 tsp
Ghee – 1tbsp
Oil – 1tbsp
Salt as required
Water as required (approx. 200ml)
In a bowl add flour, turmeric pwd, salt & mix well.
Add ghee & mix into crumble.
Now add water slowly & knead into soft dough by using hand.
Add oil, punch & fold the dough for 5 mins. Cover & rest for an hour.
Step 2 :
For stuffing ;
Chana dal – 1 cup (Soaked, cooked & grounded in mixie)
Jaggery – 1 cup
Coconut – 1/2 cup
Cardamom crushed – 1 tsp
Ghee – 1tbsp
Salt a pinch
Heat a pan, add jaggery & melt on low flame.
Add cooked chana dal, Cardamom, salt & mixed well
Now add the sherded coconut, finally add ghee, combined well, keep aside & cool it.
Once it cool down, shape in to small balls.
Step 3 :
Divided the dough & make into ball shape. Flatten the dough & stuffed the sweet puran.
Press the corner of the dough, fold & cover the sweet puran on top & pinch the extra dough.
Repeat the process to remaining dough & sweet Puran balls.
Step 4 :
Apply oil or ghee on the banana leaves & press gently the stuffed dough into round shape.
Heat the tawa, slowly place the poli on it, cook for 2 mins on each side on low medium flame.
Smear some on top & cook for another 2 mins on each side.
Serve & enjoy with ghee.
